FOUND: Earth-like planet capable of supporting life is discovered by astronomers
And in an astonishing revelation the scientist have announced that it could support alien forms of life.
The planet is called Gliese 832 c, and is around five times larger than the Earth.
At a distance of just 16 light-years away, it’s relatively close and experts say it’s the nearest we’ve ever come to finding a planet similar to our own.
Gliese 832 c is thought to have seasons and conditions like Earth and water could exist on the planet making life possible.
It takes 36 days to orbit around a red dwarf star, which is much cooler than our sun.
But with Gliese 832 c being positioned much closer to its star, it receives almost the same amount of energy as we do.
"And the closest one to Earth — a prime object for follow-up observations.”
More research will now be carried out to see how likely this new planet is to supporting life.
Robert Wittenmyer of the University of New South Wales, who first spotted the planet, said: “Given the large mass of the planet, it seems likely that it would possess a massive atmosphere, which may well render the planet inhospitable.
"Indeed, it is perhaps more likely that Gliese 832c is a 'super-Venus', featuring significant greenhouse forcing."
Perhaps this is the first real evidence that we are not alone in the universe.
